All the goodies I picked up from Kapow! comic con today. It was a really great con, not as busy as last year which was nice and they had a excellent range of creators there. The only regret is that I didn’t manage to get anything signed by Scott Snyder as I am not going to the second day. But the main thing I wanted to get, a sketch by Becky Cloonan, I got and it is amazing. I also got some other great sketchs, a Kitty Pryde & Lockheed on the cover of Wolverine & The X-Men (Issue 1) by Chris Wilson and a Vegeta as a maths teacher, which came about as a crazy idea as I spoke to the artist, Nich Angell before the con via twitter.
I also got a few things signed including some Northlanders by Declan Shalvey and a load of books by Becky Cloonan as well as picking up her self-published mini-comics. A great find on top of all this was the 5 comics I picked up for £1, most of which are just some cool looking random issues but I managed to find and pick up the first issue of the Batman: Gates Of Gotham that I missed when it came out. I also got a awesome print from Jack Lawrence of Batman, Nightwing, Robin & Mr. Freeze that has a limited number of 100 and I got number 3!
Kapow! was great this year, since going to the first ever Kapow! last year I have really gotten into going to cons all year round, having gone to LSCC and Though Bubble since last years Kapow! and the one thing that I have taken from all these cons is that all the creators I’ve met are all really nice. I’ve never had a bad experience with any creator involved with comics that I’ve gone up to to get a sketch, signing or just to talk to in general, everyone is just so great! And while I do go to some panels that are on during the show, for me it is always much more about speaking to and getting sketches from my favorite artists and creators.
There are now a couple of independent comics creators that I have seen at a few cons and I can go up to and chat with a little. People like Jack Lawrence, Nich Angell and Chris Wilson who are all great artists but also nice to just stand and chat with for a bit. Sean Phillips, who did a great small sketch for my girlfriend even though he was only supposed to be doing signings in his 2 hour session. Becky Cloonan, who is one of my favorite artists of all time, was also really nice when I spoke to her, moving some of her other sketches around so that she was able to get mine that day (as I was only there for the Saturday) is such a simple thing but it goes a long way. And the final result was just amazing as you can see. I always find that it is a little nerve wrecking when you are approaching a creator that you are a real fan of and asking for signings or a sketch, but each and every time I have done it, it’s been a great experience and said creator has always been very approachable and really nice to speak to.
It is always great to know that the industry that I want to work in is one filled with great people and the attitude towards the fans is less ‘give me your money, now go away’ and more ‘the fans are the most important people as they support our work’.
